PSM STATEMENT - 8 OCTOBER 2015 - SOSMA - BACK TO THE DARK AGES OF ISA!

PSM condemns the arrest of Lawyer Matthias Chang who is the second person detained under the Security Offences Special Measures Act (Sosma). Previously his client Khairuddin Abu Hassan was also detained for the same reason under the same draconian law. We consider both these arrest as politically motivated and in bad faith.

When SOSMA was first introduced, PSM along with other groups did express alarm that SOSMA would turn into the new ISA and will be used to ensure the ruling elites remain in power. At that time, we were given assurance that it will not be used against those who dissent against the Government. This recent arrest confirms our worst fears that SOSMA would be used further to consolidate Najib’s deteriorating support within the country and abroad.

PSM calls for the immediate release of the duo. They should instead be charged and tried and not put under detention without trial legislation. This is a serious violation to human rights and we call upon SUHAKAM to intervene and seek their release as SUHAKAM has always opposed detention without trial laws. It seems we are back at the dark ages and all the reforms made so far by Najib is back to square one.

These arrest are definitely meant to create fear and stop the march to call for Najib’s resignation. Like the ISA, we will have to fight SOSMA. The democratic struggle for change cannot be stopped by a minority government armed with draconian laws and supported by undemocratic Institutions. The fight will have to go on.
